The horse racing industry is reeling after an ABC investigation exposed the mass slaughter and mistreatment of once-prized racehorses.

A Queensland abattoir at the centre of the scandal is now being investigated over animal cruelty allegations.

But the industry's national body says it's not responsible for horses that have left the sport.
