Fasting Muslim men and women queued in front of Great Mosque of Sanaa on Tuesday to have their eyes lined with kohl as part of a tradition for the holy month of Ramadan.
Grown men winced and shed tears as the traditional powder cosmetic was applied to their eyes.
"This is a treatment that works for migraine. It cleans the eyes," said a kohl-seller echoing a popular belief that the black powder has medicinal benefits.
"I have eye infection so I have come to the Great Mosque of Sanaa more than once just to get the kohl eyeliner," said a local after receiving his kohl fix.
