Tens of thousands of teen demonstrators are going to skip school for an international climate change strike.
Tens of thousands of high school students are planning on ditching school this Friday March 15. They're not faking sick or skipping school tp play Fortnite, students across the globe are planning to skip school to protest climate change and global warming. Students hope that skipping class will send a message a to the world. On March 15, students from 72 countries are skipping school to demand action on climate change.
Letter to the Guardian: 'We finally need to treat the climate crisis as a crisis. It is the biggest threat in human history and we will not accept the world’s decision-makers’ inaction that threatens our entire civilisation. We will not accept a life in fear and devastation. We have the right to live our dreams and hopes. Climate change is already happening. People did die, are dying and will die because of it, but we can and will stop this madness.'
Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to show up in approx 72 countries including Uganda, France, Latvia, and Australia .
The protest known as #FridaysforFuture and School Strike 4 Climate is inspired by Greta Thunberg, a Swedish 16-year-old who has spent every Friday since August camping outside the Swedish parliament. Thunberg also gave a speech at Davos 2019 in Switzerland imploring world leaders to help fight climate change
Greta Thunberg, Davos: 'Adults keep saying: ‘We owe it to the young people to give them hope.’ But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.'
The protesters’ specific climate demands differ by region. For example, students in Australia seek to stop the Adani mine, a large coal mine they fear will hurt the Great Barrier Reef, while students in the U.S. will advocate for the Green New Deal, a progressive piece of climate legislation that is popular among youth-led climate initiatives like Sunrise Movement and Zero Hour.
In February 2019, young people from the Sunrise Movement clashed with Senator Dianne Feinstein (D - CA) about the legislation.
The March 15 protest isn’t the first of its kind. Numerous school-walkout protests inspired by Thunberg have taken place in Belgium, Germany, and France.
