Host on camera: Apparently they just couldn’t meet the song’s creators in the middle.
It’s on HEAVY rotation, but Zedd and Maren Morris’s smash hit, “The Middle” wasn’t so quick to be picked up. According to Variety, the song was born in January of 2017 and it took only 45 minutes for the writers to come up with lyrics for the catchy chorus. However, getting someone to sing those lyrics would be more of a challenge.
In late May, Demi Lovato cut an amazing demo and got the producers of the song really excited. She would have to choose between “The Middle” and “Sorry not sorry” for her first single. She ended up going with the latter because she was going for a more soulful, urban sound and “The Middle” was just too poppy.
A similar situation unfolded with Camilla Cabello in September. Producers were blown away with the track with Camilla’s voice attached and even set an October 18th release date, but then, she ghosted them! When she didn’t respond to a text message, they knew something was up. Apparently, she’s normally a very good responder. With the the release date only two weeks away, they got word that Camilla was out. She didn’t want “The Middle” to overshadow “Havana” which was climbing the charts at the time and eventually would hit number one.
After that they heard versions from Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo, Bebe Rexha and others, but nothing rocked their world like the Demi and Camilla versions...until they heard Maren Morris singing it. And now, we can’t escape it! It’s on replay on the radio and in our heads. To be honest, I’m pretty sick of it…
Now the question is obvious, which demo version of “The Middle” are you wishing you could hear? How different would the song be if Camilla or Demi sang on it?
