President Donald Trump tried to pressure a foreign government to give him an advantage in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, then engaged in a cover up to conceal his actions, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, one of the House managers, argued in the Senate impeachment trial on Jan. 24. “President Trump tried to cheat, he got caught and then he worked hard to cover it up,” Jeffries said. In concluding opening oral arguments, House Democrats made their case for two articles of impeachment—abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The White House will give its defense after the House managers have been allowed 24 hours over the course of three days to present their case. The trial will determine whether Trump is convicted of the two articles of impeachment and removed from office or whether he is acquitted.
