Visually impaired Mexican man saving turtles

Despite being visually impaired, Elias Jorge dedicates himself to protecting a turtle species native to southeast Mexico in his hometown of Coatzacalcos.

Six years ago Elias began to breed furrowed wood turtles in the small patio of his home. Today he even has a special permit from Mexico’s environment ministry SEMARNAT, which backs his efforts.

He has more than 40 turtles in his care and has seen 10 baby turtles born at his makeshift refuge.
