Vertical runners clamber up Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, one of France's most famous attractions, was transformed into a vertical race track on Wednesday night.

'La Verticale' was open to 130 runners from several countries. The challenge was to scale the Eiffel Tower's 1,665 steps, eventually crossing the finishing line 324 metres up in the sky.

The course presents certain challenges, the uneven steps are also open to the elements.

This year's male winner was Piotr Lobodzinski with a time of 7 minutes 53 seconds.

Australian Suzy Walsham became the female champion, completing the challenge in 10 minutes and 57 seconds.

The Parisian race is just one stop in the sporting calendar, which encompasses iconic buildings from across the globe.
