Pope Francis gave a ride on his popemobile to eight children rescued from Libya while he was on his way to a general audience in Vatican City on Wednesday.

The eight children, hailing from Syria, Nigeria and Congo, were airlifted from war-torn Libya on April 29 with their families and are currently under the care of an NGO close to the Vatican named Auxilium.

The pope called them onto his vehicle and they drove together through Saint Peter’s Square. The children were wearing t-shirts with a quote from Pope Francis about immigration, reading: "Welcome, Protect, Promote, Integrate.”
