According to a report by Reuters, on Saturday, a Catholic nun told bishops to acknowledge the church's hypocrisy in its handling of the sexual abuse crisis, while a cardinal admitted that case files had been destroyed. Sister Veronica Openibo, a Nigerian who has worked in Africa, Europe and the United States, reportedly said, "We must acknowledge that our mediocrity, hypocrisy and complacency have brought us to this disgraceful and scandalous place we find ourselves as a Church." While German Cardinal Reinhard Marx reportedly said, "Files that could have documented the terrible deeds and named those responsible were destroyed, or not even created. Instead of the perpetrators, the victims were regulated and silence imposed on them." The Vatican has reportedly said that it will formulate follow-up measures to assure that all bishops return home knowing how to put anti-abuse procedures into place.
