White House Counsel Pat Cipollone accused the Democrats of "interference" of US elections during US President Donald Trump's Senate impeachment trial in Washington DC, on Saturday.

"For all their talk about election interference, that they're here to perpetrate the most massive interference in an election in American history. And we can't allow that to happen," said the head of the defence team, Cipollone.

"If you were really interested in finding out the truth, why would you run a process the way they ran? If you were really confident in your position on the facts, why would you lock everybody out of it? From the president's side, why would you do that?"

The last day of the hearings mostly focused on the White House's alleged efforts to cover up Trump's tracks by limiting access to records and blocking the whistleblower's complaint.

The US president is facing impeachment over charges of abuse of power as well as obstruction of Congress, but with a Republican majority in the Senate and a super-majority required for a conviction, the president looks set to remain in office.
