US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the EU's new foreign policy chief Josep Borrell at the White House on both Thursday and Friday.
White House senior council and son-in-law of President Trump, Jared Kushner also attended the meetings, the European Union confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.
The two representatives can be seen amicably shaking hands before leaving to discuss divisions between the EU and the US on the current Iran policy, among other topics. Relations between the US and the EU have been troubled since President Donald Trump took office and Pompeo is aiming to rebuild the historically close bond.
“These meetings will provide an opportunity to advance the foreign policy dialogue between the EU and US and should focus specifically on ways to enhance transatlantic relations,” the EU’s foreign service said in a statement.
Borrell has been a member of the European Parliament for Spain since 2004 and took the role as foreign policy chief on December 1st 2019, when he replaced outgoing Italian, Federica Mogherini.
