Military personnel was seen arriving at New York City's Javits Convention Center on Monday, as the field hospital started receiving coronavirus patients in an effort to alleviate the pressure on the city's overwhelmed hospitals.

The centre was converted into a field hospital by the US National Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers in less than a week, after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo appealed to the federal government for military help.

Originally intended to host non-COVID patients, it's set to become the largest hospital in the country on the frontline against coronavirus with 2,500 beds.

New York City has 64,955 reported cases as of Monday, and over 2,400 deaths confirmed.
