Residents of the Hawaiian island of Maui have been forced to evacuate their homes after wildfires erupted on the island on Friday.

Footage taken from people fleeing the fires show the blaze burning everything on its way close to the highway.

According to reports, the fire was reported near the intersection of Waiko Road and Kuihelani Highway at 10:42 local time (22:42 GMT) and more than 10,000 acres of dry bush and sugar cane are believed to have been consumed by the blaze.

Emergency operations have been activated on the island, with shelters in Wailuku and Kihei being opened and access in and out of Kihei blocked.
