American MMA fighter Dustin Poirier beat Max Holloway in an UFC fight in Atlanta on Saturday, claiming the UFC interim lightweight belt and launched his challenge to Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov for the overall title.
"I can't put it into words, you know, I thought about it every night since the fight was announced, I thought about that before that but it feels even better than I thought it was gonna feel, because I earned every step of the way," said Poirier after the fight.
Speaking about a possible upcoming fight against Khabib, Poirier said that "whenever they wanna do it [the fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov], I'm down," adding that "this is a piece of the world title, but it's a damn good piece and we need to unify the belts."
Khabib Nurmagomedov is the current undisputed UFC lightwelt champion. However he has been suspended for nine months following a brawl against Conor McGregor and his staff at the end of their fight on October 2018. He will be eligible to compete again on July 6 2019.
