“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett pleaded not guilty to all charges against him in Chicago on Thursday, in a high profile case in which he is alleged to have orchestrated a fake racist and homophobic attack against himself.

Footage shows Smollett entering court and his lawyer entering a plea of not guilty after declining to have the charges formally read.

Smollett was charged with 16 felonies including disorderly conduct and making a false report, according to a criminal complaint, following the investigation of a January 29 attack in which he claims he was targeted due to his race and sexual orientation.
