The US military is sending more than 1,000 of its doctors, nurses and other medical staff to New York to help overburdened hospitals.

Meanwhile, the city's mayor is calling for a national mobilisation of medical personnel to fight the pandemic.

And as Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from New York, thousands of retired doctors, as well as medical students, are volunteering to help.
