According to Reuters, a U.S. State Department spokesman said that U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman met with Paul Whelan, an American detained in Moscow since Friday on allegations of spying. In a statement the spokesman said that “Ambassador Huntsman expressed his support for Mr. Whelan and offered the embassy’s assistance." Whelan’s family has rejected Russia’s allegations. Russian authorities have said that Whelan could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
