More than 100 firefighters were trying to contain two forest fires in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power station on Sunday, the Ukrainian State Emergency Situations Service (SES) said.
According to the SES, 124 firefighters and 28 pieces of equipment, including two planes and one helicopter, were involved in the operation.
Ukraine's State Ecological Inspection Service, Yegor Firsov, wrote on Facebook that the radiation level has spiked 16 times above normal in the bushfire area. He also added that the blaze had spread to around 100 hectares, 20 of which were in the exclusion zone.
However, on Sunday morning the authorities announced that the fire was not visibly burning and no increase in radiation in the air had been detected.
