Thousands of revellers gathered for one of the high points of the Cologne Carnival on Monday, the traditional Rosenmontag parade, in a celebration replete with sweets and flowers.

Floats with effigies of politicians dominated the parade, ranging from portrayals of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin sharing a beer, to an effigy of French President Emmanuel Macron being toppled by Yellow Vests protesters

Some Hambach forest activists were also present among the crowd.

Many German speaking countries celebrate carnival in the week leading up to Lent. Celebrations can vary from country to country and between different regions; however all of them are aimed at welcoming spring while banishing the 'winter spirits.'
