Both Democrats and Republicans in the US are trying to block arms sales to Saudi Arabia, amid growing concern that US-made weapons were being used on Yemeni civilians

Last month, the government declared a national security emergency, citing growing threats from Iran, to justify an $8bn weapons sale.

Next week the Senate is expected to vote to try to block the sale.
