US President Donald Trump has announced that he is replacing James Mattis as his defence secretary two months earlier than expected.

Mattis’s deputy Patrick Shanahan will take his place on January 1. Mattis had resigned on Thursday in protest against Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria and was due to work until the end of February.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports from Washington, DC.
