housands of people south of Manila, the Philippines have sought refuge at temporary shelters after the restive Taal volcano spewed ash, blanketing several towns and the surrounding countryside in grey. Evacuees huddled together with the few belongings they managed to salvage. More than 16,000 people have been forced to leave their homes near the volcano which is a popular tourist attraction.
