A soldier who went on a shooting rampage in northeastern Thailand, killing at least 20 people, was shot dead by security services on Sunday morning after he holed himself up in a shopping centre.

Gun violence is not unknown in Thailand, but this is a different scale.

It will be remembered as one of Thailand's darkest days.
