Ted Cruz is trying to pass a bill that would make El Chapo pay for Trump's border wall.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is trying to pass a bill called the EL CHAPO Act. that would divert all money from recently convicted drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to help finance increased border security, including Trump’s border wall
Cruz first introduced the act in April 2017 and reintroduced it early Jan 2018 He began pushing for it on social media on Feb 12 on the heels of El Chapo’s conviction.
After a 12-week trial, El Chapo was convicted on 10 federal criminal charges, including international distribution of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs.
He faces life in prison and prosecutors want his estimated $14 billion estate handed over to the U.S. government.
‘America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all 10 counts. U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits & other assets from El Chapo which should go towards funding our wall to #SecureTheBorder.’ -- Ted Cruz in a tweet.
The act has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
