US rapper Rakim Mayers, also known as A$AP Rocky, was charged with assault in a hearing in Stockholm on Thursday, for an incident his lawyer described as 'self-defence.'

"He is somebody that felt that he was under attack, that he was followed, harassed, from a person that had an aggressive behaviour, he acted in self-defence, after many, many times that they pleaded and begged the person to quit following them, and now my client is here facing an uncertain trial," said Slobodan Jovicic, Mayers' lawyer.

US President Donald Trump reportedly called Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven to secure the rapper's release, though Lofven's spokesperson Toni Eriksson said the PM would not intervene in the case.

A$AP Rocky has been held since July 3, after a June 30 confrontation in the Swedish capital.
