Tens of thousands marched through the streets of Barcelona on Wednesday, marking Diada - the National Day of Catalonia and demanding region’s independence from Spain.

Demonstrators were seen waving Estelada flags, as well as holding banners in support of "political prisoners."

The demonstration was called by the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural under the slogan "Objective Independence."

Unlike most independence days, Catalan National Day 'La Diada' celebrated on September 11, commemorates the fall of Barcelona to the troops of King Philip V of Spain after a 14-month siege in 1714.
