The Spanish Civil Guard spearheaded an operation to dismantle an organised crime group involved in "manipulating professional tennis competitions," Europol said in a statement on Thursday. The operation was carried out on an unspecified date in Madrid earlier this month.

A total of 83 suspects were arrested, 28 of them professional players, in connection with alleged tennis match fixing. Fifteen persons have been detained, according to reports, while the others remain under investigation.

Some €167,000 ($192,000) in cash was confiscated in the police raids on 11 homes. A shotgun, and a number of electronic devices and vehicles were also seized.
