Barcelona moved a step closer to retaining their La Liga title with a comfortable victory over mid-table Alaves in Vitoria-Gasteiz on Tuesday.
Goals from young midfielder Carles Alena and Luis Suarez mean that Barcelona will be crowned champions on Wednesday if Atletico fail to win against Valencia.
It was 0-0 at half-time at the Estadio Mendizorrotza after Barcelona left Captain Lionel Messi on the bench, but a close-range finish from Alena and a penalty from Suarez leaves defending champions 12 points clear with five games remaining.
When asked if he would prefer to be crowned champions on Wednesday or after their match against Levante at the weekend, Barcelona Manager Ernesto Valverde replied jokingly that he liked the question.
"I like that question! If you asked me that in August .. but now it's a good thing you asked me that because we can become champions. I know Atletico Madrid have made it very hard for us because they have been competing since day one and tomorrow they have a very difficult match against Valencia."
