Sixteen migrants have perished in a boat accident in the Aegean Sea, off the Agathonisi Island at the weekend. According to Greek coastguards, five children are among the dead. The coast guards rescued two people, who were brought ashore alongside the bodies of the dead. Authorities say 22 people are believed to have been on the boat. This makes it the highest death toll of migrants trying to reach outlying Greek islands in months. The nationalities of the victims are not yet known.
