According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, a bipartisan group of US Senators called on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to designate the Myanmar's military campaign against the Rohingya Muslim minority a genocide. Over 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state since August of last year when attacks on security posts by Rohingya insurgents triggered a military crackdown described internationally as ethnic cleansing. Reuters reports that a declaration of genocide by the U.S. government could have legal implications, including a commitment by Washington to stronger punitive measures against the Myanmar government, led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
