According to a report by Mother Nature Network, scientists have discovered a massive anomaly under the surface of the moon, and its big enough to have a significant impact on the moon's gravitational field. The 'large excess of mass,' roughly five times the size of Hawaii's Big Island, lies in the heart of the South Pole-Aitken Basin and is approximately 1,600 miles wide. Study co-author Peter James of Baylor University said in a press release, "Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground. That's roughly how much unexpected mass we detected." James goes on to suggest that, "One of the explanations of this extra mass, is that the metal from the asteroid that formed this crater is still embedded in the Moon's mantle."
