Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his US counterpart Donald Trump’s for engaging in direct talks with North Korea, speaking at the plenary session of the 16th meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday.
He stated that “hope for a peaceful settlement” in the Korean peninsula appeared the moment that Washington ended its “usual, sometimes very harsh and even insulting rhetoric.”
Putin added that Trump’s North Korea policy should be given time, applauding the US president’s “bravery and capacity to make extraordinary steps.”
Alongside Putin, four other world leaders took part in the plenary session discussion.
In his speech, Jordanian King Abdullah IIbin Al-Hussein addressed the Israeli-Palestine conflict, stating that a two-state solution was the only way to ensure stability in the region.
The session was also attended by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The 16th annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club kicked off in Sochi on September 30. This year’s event gathers together high-level officials and experts from around the globe for discussions under the theme ‘The Dawn of the East and the World Political Order.’
