The Russian Ministry of Defence released footage on Sunday showing the first ever public test launch of the Avangard hypersonic glider at the Dombarovsky air base in the Orenburg Region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin joined Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in watching the missile launch from the MoD headquarters in Moscow.

According to the MoD, the missile can travel at a speed of over 20 Mach (24,700 km/h; 15,350 mph) and its composite material hull withstands temperatures of up to 2,000° Celsius (3632°F).

Putin previously announced that the Avangard missile unit is expected to enter into the Russian army and navy's service in 2019.
