Italian street artist Jorit Agoch created a massive mural depicting Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the wall of an apartment block in the city of Odintsovo on Wednesday as part of the Urban Morphogenesis Street Art Festival.

The artist explained why he chose Gagarin: “I wanted to show Russia that we, Europeans, are very grateful to the Russians for saving us from the Nazis during the Second World War. I wanted to remind everyone that the battle of Stalingrad turned the tide of the war."

Agoch is convinced that street art “should convey some thought or idea to people, not only to decorate a wall," that, in his opinion "is also good".

The 60-metre (200ft) long Gagarin graffiti is part of the Urban Morphogenesis Street Art Festival which this year draws artists from 26 countries around the world.
