Hundreds of people took to the streets of Lima on Thursday to express their opinions on the dissolution of Peru's Congress, either attacking or defending President Martin Vizcarra's decision.

Some minor scuffles broke out between anti and pro-dissolution protesters, who shouted and pushed each other. Police had to intervene by placing metal barriers to keep them apart.

The dissolution announcement came after lawmakers voted to replace almost all Constitutional Court judges despite the objections of President Vizcarra, who presented a vote of confidence to the Congress in an attempt to prevent the move. Vizcarra dissolved the Congress after it appointed a new justice.

Opposition politicians who held the majority in Congress said the dissolution amounted to a coup.
