Ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2019/2020. For their Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 collections labels across the board wanted to project an image of strong, powerful women.
At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere came up with a sporty warrior-inspired offering. The label’s beloved checked monochrome print was on proud display, often bringing to mind the energy and dynamism of the race track. We also saw leather skull-caps, a nod to those worn last century by pilots and Grand Prix motorists.
Louis Vuitton embraced creativity with its decor too, installing a replica Pompidou Centre facade inside a Louvre courtyard. Some dared to ask why the label didn’t simply choose to hold the show in front of the Pompidou itself – with some replying that that would have been too simple – and too cheap !
American designer Thom Browne held his show at the great hall of Paris’s School of Fine Arts. The New Yorker paid hommage to Lady Troubridge, the British feminist rebel. The sculptor was known for her translations of Collette, as well as her androgynous style. In the words of British actress Sienna Miller : ‘the women really look powerful, and now’s the time for that’.
