US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commended the Paraguayan government's support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on a visit to Asuncion this Saturday.
"Together, we are working to restore stability and democracy from the chaos caused by Maduro," declared Pompeo.
"As a member of the Lima Group, Paraguay stands among the leaders in our hemisphere in defence of democracy, in calling out Maduro for what he truly is, a power-hungry tyrant who has brought ruin to his country," he continued.
His Paraguayan counterpart Luis Alberto Castiglioni reiterated this message, saying, "our governments are committed to help so that the people of Venezuela recover their fundamental rights."
Pompeo also held talks Paraguay's President Mario Abdo Benitez during his four-nation tour of Latin America. He arrived from Chile and is set to meet Peru's President Martin Vizcarra and Foreign Minister Nestor Popolizio in Lima, before a final stop in the Colombian city of Cucuta on the Venezuelan border.
