Hundreds of Palestinian Muslims gathered to pray on the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha at the Al-Aqsa compound in East Jerusalem on Sunday, before clashes broke out between them and Israeli security forces.
Footage shows security forces engaging in scuffles with Palestinians as tear gas rises in the background. Police reportedly also used stun grenades against worshippers in the holy site.
Eid al-Adha or the 'Festival of Sacrifice', is one of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other being Eid al-Fitr. It marks Ibrahim/Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God before Jibra'il/Gabriel's intervention. Animals are often sacrificed on the holiday to remember the offering.
