Farmers and Pakistan Agriculture Department workers were seen adopting several measures to ward off huge swarms of locusts attacking crops in the Athara Hazari area of Jhang District in Punjab on Monday.

While some farmers were seen beating steel plates with sticks, others were setting fires in the hope that the smoke would chase locusts away.

Farmer Ejaz Ahmed deemed the measures ineffective, saying that locusts "are still alive" despite the two-day spraying operation.

He also noted that locusts "destroy everything."
