Victoria’s Secret is changing things up after multiple conflicts in years past… and the lingerie company is turning over a new leaf by introducing their first transgender model. It’s kinda sorta about dang time!
What’s up guys, it’s Sussan Mourad back here on Clevver News, and it may be 2019, but recent historical events with lingerie giants may have kept you guessing what year it may be. Thankfully, Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio came in and was all, ‘hold my beer,’ as Victoria’s Secret just changed the game and named its first ever transgender model.
The new model took to Instagram to show off behind-the-scenes photos and videos, looking flawless as ever, I might add, and captioned one of her videos “Never stop dreaming”.
Although fans took the news of Valentina’s new gig in full supportive stride, many were confused considering just last year Victoria’s Secret’s CMO, Ed Razek, was under fire for comments he made regarding whether or not to include trans models in the VS Fashion Show.
He said QUOTE, “Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy.”
Turns out Ed Razek’s “fantasy” and time with the Victoria’s Secret brand has officially come to an end! According to the Wall Street Journal, Razek’s departure was revealed to employees on Monday in an internal memo from chairman and CEO Les Wexne. Interestingly enough, his departure comes almot one year after he said VS would never cast transgender models in its runway show because the event is a “fantasy”.
This didn’t sit well with some angels and famous VS models like Karlie Kloss and Lily Aldridge backed the trans community, posting photos reading, “Trans and Gender Non-Conforming people are not a debate” to their Instagram stories shortly after the controversy.
On that note, Karlie actually allegedly stopped working for the lingerie brand due to many a controversy, including casting decisions, only hiring tall, thin models, and lack of inclusion.
She told British Vogue last month QUOTE, “I didn’t feel it was an image that was truly reflective of who I am and the kind of message I want to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful. I think that was a pivotal moment in me stepping into my power as a feminist, being able to make my own choices and my own narrative, whether through the companies I choose to work with, or through the image I put out to the world.”
Anyone else just hear that major MIC DROP? Unfortunately for Valentina, however, she won’t be able to walk in the VS Fashion Show this year after model Shanina Shaik recently revealed its cancellation.
Many speculated that the show was struggling due to its decline in viewership, and one person who voiced her strong feelings when news of the cancellation first broke was trans YouTuber Nikita Dragun. Nikita previously slammed the brand for its anti-trans comments by posting her own version of “the Fantasy” and on this news took the opportunity to share her video again. And it may not have been fully Nikita’s doing, but lesson learned here is never mess with the mother of Draguns, y’all.
And now on the recent news of VS signing its first trans model, Nikita shared her joy and excitement of the news on Twitter tweeting, “Victoria's Secret has hired its first Transgender model! i could literally cry out of happiest. i’ve said from the beginning the point of my video was never to be cast as a model. i just wanted to prove that Trans woman can sell the fantasy! to see change like this is amazing!”
And we couldn’t agree more! So what do you guys think of this news? Are you excited to see a Valentina join Victoria Secret? Be sure to share your congratulations to Valentina below too.
