Land mines are indiscriminate weapons. They can remain dangerous many years after a conflict has ended. Every year, thousands of civilians are killed by the explosions. Children are the most affected. In Tanzania however, a non-governmental organization is training giant rats to detect and clear landmines, saving communities living close to those areas. The rats have gained popularity and are being referred to as Hero Rats.
