New Zealand police have labelled the country's first firearms buy-back event a success. Nearly 200 owners handed in prohibited firearms for cash in the city of Christchurch. It is said that more than 200,000 New Zealand dollars were paid in the first couple of hours. After a lone gunman killed over 50 people at two Christchurch mosques in March, New Zealand lawmakers rushed through new legislation the following month to ban so-called military-style weapons. Under an amnesty, gun owners have until December to turn over their now-banned weapons.
