MPs reject Johnson's second election bid

Dramatic events in the Commons sees Boris Johnson's bid for a general election rejected, as MPs prioritise avoiding a no-deal Brexit.

In late-night proceedings, the House of Commons voted by 293 to 46 in favour of the prime minister's motion calling for an early election on 15 October.

Parliament will now be suspended for five weeks.
