Thousands of demonstrators gathered on Sükhbaatar Square in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on Thursday to protest against a corruption scandal involving members of parliament.

The protesters gathered to speak out against alleged corruption, bribery and embezzlement by the two ruling parties, the Mongolian People’s Party and the Democratic Party (MANAN). Specifically, Mongolian parliament speaker Enkhbold Miyegombo has been accused of selling government positions and there have been calls for him to step down. Enkhbold has repeatedly denied the allegations and has refused to resign.

Over half of the members of the 76-parliament have boycotted plenary sessions in recent weeks, demanding Enkhbold step down. On Monday, the Mongolian opposition Democratic Party (DP) called for immediate nationwide elections.

On December 27, 2018, according to organizers’ estimations, nearly 25,000 people took to the streets in freezing temperatures to protest against the parliamentary chairman and MANAN.
