Leader of the Democratic party of Moldova Vladimir Plahotniuc cast his ballot in the country's parliamentary election in Chisinau on Sunday.

He and his son visited the polling station in the centre of Chisinau.

A total of 14 parties and one bloc compete for seats in the 101-member parliament. The main struggle is set to unfold between the ruling Party of Socialists, who are advocating closer cooperation with Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union, and the ruling Democratic Party and the opposition bloc ACUM, both of whom are supporting European integration. In 2017 the Democratic Party had gathered 42 of the seats in the parliament.

Polling stations opened at 07: 00 (05:00 GMT) and will close at 21:00 (18:00 GMT).

Over four thousand observers are watching the elections. Of these, 3,412 are local observers and 776 are international.
