Spinach, Vicky and Leafy are some of the bushfire survivors taken in by Healesville Sanctuary, northeast of Melbourne. Sanctuary staff are hand-feeding the koalas and carefully treating their burns to give them the best chance at rehabilitation.
Footage shot on Friday shows how keepers are feeding the scalded marsupials as they struggle to grab food, namely eucalyptus leaves, with their paws. One of the rescued koalas can be seen anaesthetised as veterinarians remove some of the burned skin off its paws and re-bandage them.
At least 34 people and around one billion animals have reportedly died since a record-breaking heatwave triggered a disastrous Australian bushfire season, which escalated in September of last year.
Dozens of bushfires are still raging through Victoria and New South Wales, although storms have brought relief to exhausted firefighters in recent days.
