A new study has found that if you wind up in the ER, chances are your doctors have no clue what the tests and treatments they order will cost. Researchers asked more than 400 emergency medicine health care professionals -- including physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners -- about the cost of care for three types of cases commonly seen in an emergency department: a 35-year old woman with abdominal pain, a 57-year old man with labored breathing and a 7-year old boy with a sore throat. Only four out of 10 could accurately estimate the cost range for the three situations. The researchers said their findings point to the need to improve health care providers' awareness about the costs of emergency care.
