Malaysian: Sultan of Pahang crowned as 16th king

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of central Pahang state was crowned as Malaysia's 16th king at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Dressed in aqua blue regalia, Sultan Abdullah received a 21-gun salute before inspecting the the 1st Battalion Royal Malay Regiment on the steps of the national palace.

Nine hereditary state rulers take turns as king for five-year terms, the only such system in the world.

Sultan Muhammad V's sudden resignation, after just two years on throne, was the first in the country's history.
