Authorities confirmed on Wednesday their first case of the new coronavirus - a 52-year-old woman from Wuhan who arrived in Macao on Sunday.

The former Portuguese colony draws a large influx of tourists from mainland China due to its gambling industry. Authorities have reportedly ordered casino workers to wear masks as a precautionary measure.

An outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a newly emerging coronavirus - also known as 2019-nCoV - was reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, with the virus subsequently being diagnosed in Beijing, Shanghai, and outside of China.

Nine people have died and 440 have been infected by the coronavirus, according to China's National Health Commission.
