President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani delivers opening remarks at the European Council in Brussels on Wednesday, October 17, as the Council begins its first day of discussions over Brexit negotiations.

In the two-day summit, European leaders are set to review the state of the negotiations with the UK, settle core issues in the planned Brexit deal, and define future steps for completing the withdrawal.

If there is no breakthrough, EU leaders will encourage British officials to spend more face-time with chief negotiator Michel Barnier so that a deal can be ready in time for the regular EU summit in December.
